COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has refuted claims that he will block William Ruto from State House if he wins the upcoming General election.
In an interview with NTV on Sunday, January 9, Atwoli denied allegations he has plans to deny Deputy President William Ruto from becoming the president.
“If you have won an election, you have won, it is covered in our constitution, and you will be the president of the Republic of Kenya,” Atwoli said.
Atwoli, a fierce critic of Ruto, was confident that Kenyans will turn out in large numbers during the August election and maintained that in free, fair, and verifiable elections, Ruto will be defeated.
“I have said from 2014, and I don’t want people to put words in my mouth that I said William Ruto will not be allowed to be president. If he democratically wins, who am I to deny him the opportunity to ascend to power?” wondered the outspoken trade unionist.
The COTU Secretary General cautioned Kenyans not to be divided along ethnic lines, terming the recent utterance by Mithika Linturi, as unfortunate.
During his tour of the Western region last week, the Deputy President accused the COTU Secretary General of being clueless about Kenya’s politics.
Ruto accused Atwoli of propagating lies that the deep state and the system will not allow him to be declared the winner.
In the past Atwoli had said that the Deputy President will not be on the ballot in the August elections, words that Ruto allies termed offensive.
