Mike Sonko: I employed Raila’s relatives but he betrayed me

by Enock Ndayala

Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has accused opposition leader Raila Odinga of what he says is a betrayal of the highest order.

Sonko who served as the governor of the capital city for three years before he was impeached said that he employed Raila’s close relatives while serving as governor.

The controversial politician revealed that he appointed Raila Odinga’s sister to head the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited (NCWSC) and his cousin to chair Mbagathi Hospital.

Sonko further alleged that he promptly dug boreholes in Raila and his daughter Rosemary’s private residences in Nairobi when he came calling.

“This honorable Raila Amollo Odinga, I remember when I was governor, I appointed his sister as the chairman of Nairobi Water, I appointed his cousin as the chairperson of Mbagathi Hospital, I gave positions to his people as chief officers, he even asked me to dig a borehole at his house and for his daughter Rosemary, I did it,” he said.

The flamboyant politician however stated that despite all the good things he did to Raila, the former Prime Minister later joined hands with then-president Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure he was impeached.

“… but in the end, they joined hands with Uhuru Kenyatta and ousted me. So these are people who lack gratitude,” Sonko said.

The flashy governor, always in love with gold, was officially impeached in December 2020 after 88 Members of the County Assembly voted to have him kicked out against two who voted in his favor.

The senate further voted overwhelmingly in favor of four charges brought against the governor which included gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, misconduct, and crimes against national law.

His impeachment happened after the politician was at loggerheads with the national government, especially President Uhuru Kenyatta whom he had accused of meddling in Nairobi county matters.
