On Tuesday, September 28, President William Ruto nominated a list of 22 members for consideration to fill up the vacancies in the Cabinet.
These happened just hours after the Head of State met former Cabinet Secretaries appointed by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.
Almost half of those nominated were either involved in corruption scandals or are currently facing corruption and murder charges in corridors of justice.
Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen, former ODM Secretary General Ababu Namwamba, and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi are among the proposed cabinet secretaries who were once implicated in corruption cases.
Former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi have pending court cases.
As such, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged Members of the National Assembly to stay true to their oath of office by rejecting some of the Cabinet Secretaries proposed for consideration by President William Ruto.
Sifuna, who doubled up as Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Secretary General said half of the cabinet nominees were criminals.
“If our colleagues in the National Assembly stay true to their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, more than half of those criminals proposed should not make it to Cabinet
“Is that a proposed cabinet list or a criminal cases update from the office of the DPP?” Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said.
On Thursday, September 29, the Head of State President William Ruto is set to address the first joint sitting of the bicameral house which will pave the way for the vetting of the cabinet nominees.
If approved by the National Assembly, the nominees will subsequently be sworn in as Cabinet Secretaries.
It is suspected that the nominees with pending court cases will walk scot-free once the National Assembly approves them for various slots in William Ruto’s government.
