It will take time for President Ruto to solve cost of living- Shollei

In the build-up for the August 9, General Election, the then-presidential candidate William Ruto promised to bring down the cost of living if he wins the presidency.

During the unveiling of his manifesto, Ruto pledged to fix the issue of the high cost of living in his first 100 days in office.

However, the cost of living went up immediately after William Ruto was sworn in as the fifth President after he suspended the subsidy on food and fuel prices that were introduced by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.

On Tuesday, October 11, Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei said it will take up to 12 months for President William Ruto to solve the cost of living.

Shollei who was speaking during an interview with KTN urged Kenyans to tighten their belts because the pain will not go away immediately.

“We have to tighten our belts, it is going to be a difficult time probably for the next 100 days to 12 months. Kenyans will begin to see the fruits of some of the decisions in a year’s time,” she said.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker further defended President William Ruto’s move not to subsidize fuel and maize flour.

Shollei stated that subsidizing fuel and everything is only a short-term measure that cannot help Kenyans because it is not sustainable.

“We are facing famine, and the price of Unga is still high but in the long term, the most sustainable decision is to say let’s subsidize fertilizer, increase production, and then the price will naturally come down,” she said.

On his part, the First in Command blamed ongoing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for the current considered high cost of living in Kenya.
