Johnson Sakaja cleared by IEBC ending doubts over his degree certificate

by Enock Ndayala

On Monday, June 6, there were speculations that Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja had gone to purchase a degree from a university in the neighboring country Uganda.

This was after reports emerged that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) gubernatorial candidate did not graduate from the University of Nairobi (UoN).

Sakaja, who is said to hold a Degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi later, dismissed as ‘cheap propaganda the reports that he neither completed Univeristy nor graduated.

But on Tuesday, June 7, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared Sakaja for Nairobi gubernatorial contest in the August 9, General Election bringing to an end the debate surrounding his academic qualifications.

His clearance happened after several hours of waiting at the Kasarani gymnasium where he had presented his academic papers for verification.

Speaking shortly after being cleared, the UDA gubernatorial candidate said that his government will work for the people to ensure quality service delivery for city dwellers.

“Nairobi residents should avoid looking at tribe when voting. Let’s vote for leaders who have the interest of Nairobi at heart,” Sakaja said.

He assured his supporters that he will win the hotly anticipated race to restore Nairobi’s lost glory.

“Our march is unstoppable and our victory is inevitable. We must restore our city back to its former glory by offering our people order, dignity, hope, and opportunity for all. We must make Nairobi work,” he said.

Last week, Sakaja dismissed a letter that circulated online claiming that he did not graduate from the University of Nairobi as propaganda.

He accused his competitors of peddling fake documents to tarnish his integrity and credibility as a leader.

“Do I look like someone who has not gone to school? Ignore the propaganda being peddled around. I have more academic credentials than what they are looking for,” said the lawmaker in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke.
