Kalonzo Musyoka says President Uhuru owes him a political debt

by Nderi Caren

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said that President Uhuru Kenyatta owes him a political debt for helping him 2007.

According to Kalonzo, he played a significant role in the appointment of President Uhuru Kenyatta as a Deputy Prime Minister during President Mwai Kibaki’s second term in office.

Speaking during a meeting between  OKA principals and the Mt Kenya Foundation members, Kalonzo said Kibaki was hesitant to appoint another Kikuyu to a high office at the time.

“I will tell you some truth which I’m saying for the first time publicly, It was me who convinced Mzee Kibaki to appoint President Uhuru the Deputy Prime Minister,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo said that Kibaki found it hard to appoint another Kikuyu to a high office due to the political tensions that were brought by the post-election violence.

“Because Mzee Kibaki was a nationalist, he told me Vice President, you want me to appoint another Kikuyu?” Kalonzo recalled.

Kalonzo said that through the appointment as the Deputy Prime Minister, President Uhuru built the muscle that earned him the presidency.

“Because you remember the Kofi Anna Talks when Raila appointed Mudavadi… and then I was in PNU alliance with Kibaki… I told him, yes!

And Uhuru became the deputy prime minister and the minister for trade, and eventually, the Minister for Finance,” Kalonzo said.

For this reason, Kalonzo believes that President Uhuru owes him a political debt.

The Mt Kenya Foundation held a meeting with the One Kenya Alliance principals; Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, Gideon Moi, and Moses Wetangula.

This comes a week after holding a similar meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The group said that they were engaging several presidential aspirants at the request of President Uhuru.

“This is the journey that we have started and once we are done we will go back to the President and tell him this is the person we want to succeed you,” said foundation’s Vice-Chair Titus Ibui.
