Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has sensationally branded himself as the ‘acting’ president of the republic of Kenya.
Speaking at the University of Eldoret on Friday, September 15, the CS said he was the one in charge following the absence of President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
“Do you want me to greet the president, his deputy, and Musalia Mudavadi? Sasa Rais ako Merikani, Riggy G ako Colombia, Musalia ako London, na mimi ndio nimekalia…asante,” Moses Kuria said.
It is understood that the Head of State is on an official visit to the United States.
On the other side, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in Colombia for an official visit.
While there is no Constitutional crisis following their absence from the country at the same time, questions have arisen as to who is in charge.
According to the 2010 Constitution, the Speaker of the National Assembly is automatically the one in charge in the event both the President and his deputy are not around.
This means that Moses Wetang’ula is now the one in charge of the country.
However, Wetang’ula is only expected to receive international guests on behalf of President William Ruto.
Mudavadi, who does not occupy a constitutional office, is also seen as a senior member of the executive and would take over government operations whenever Ruto and Gachagua are away.
Among Cabinet Secretaries, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki is ranked as the most senior, just below Mudavadi.
