Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday, January 23, led his supporters to protest over alleged rigging of the 2022 presidential elections.

Raila who had been away addressed thousands of his supporters at the Kamkunji ground where he categorically said that he does not recognize William Ruto as the president.

This appears to be a new bone of contention between Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja and a section of the members of the Nairobi county assembly.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday, January 23, led his supporters to protest over alleged rigging of the 2022 presidential elections.

This was after a section of Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) allied to President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) sensationally claimed that Governors Johnson Sakaja was the one who financed Raila’s Kamkunji rally.

Led by minority leader Anthony Kiragu, the leaders said they are aware the governor gave out the county charter hall where the organizers of the rally met a day prior to the rally.

“We are aware that he facilitated the planning of that meeting. He donated to the charter hall on Sunday afternoon where groups were meeting during the day to strategize, mobilize and fundraise for that event,” Kiragu said.

This is contrary to President Ruto’s allegations that cartels in the Agriculture sector were the ones who bankrolled Raila’s Kamkunji rally.

“These cartels and corrupt people in the coffee, tea, and milk industries are the ones financing the protests because of our plan to get rid of cartels,

“We must ensure that farmers’ businesses are thriving because they are the surest solutions for our food security intervention,” Ruto said.

Earlier, Sakaja who has in the recent past traded barbs with Deputy President Rigathi Gachaguahad defended his move to work with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“I have no apologies for working with Raila Odinga. And I have no apologies for working with William Ruto. In fact, on the day that Raila and Ruto will have a sit-down, I am the one who will facilitate that,” Sakaja said.
