Registrar of political parties officially kills NASA coalition

by Enock Ndayala

Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu has officially dissolved the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition four years after it was formed.

This comes barely a month after three affiliate parties (ANC, Wiper, Ford-Kenya) sought to dissolve the coalition after disagreements with Raila Odinga’s ODM party.

The NASA coalition brought together Raila Odinga (ODM), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya), and former Bomet governor Isaac Ruto of Chama Cha Mashinani.

In a letter to party leaders Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetang’ula and Isaac Ruto on Friday, August 27, the registrar of political parties informed them that the once most popular coalition is no more.

“Pursuant to Regulation 22(1) of Political Parties (Registration) Regulations, 2019, and Article 15 (1) of the National Super Alliance (Nasa) Coalition Agreement, this office received submissions from ANC, Chama Cha Mashinani, Ford Kenya Party, and Wiper,” Nderitu said.

She said that after reviewing the submissions made by the three parties, the Nasa coalition stands dissolved.

“Article 15(1) of the Coalition Agreement stipulates that the coalition shall stand dissolved where any three of the coalition parties decide to leave the coalition,” the letter added.

Nderitu further said the dissolution will be published in two newspapers.

“This Office shall, in line with Regulation 22 (2) of the Political Parties (Registration) Regulations, 2019, publish a notice of the dissolution in two newspapers,” said Nderitu.

Earlier this month, Kalonzo, Mudavadi, and Wetangula signed a formal exit from the opposition coalition and accused Raila Odinga of being untrustworthy.

They reiterated that the coalition ‘died’ due to frustrations from the ODM party.

Among the issues that led to dissolution is the sharing of the coalition’s funds from the Political Parties Fund among the former affiliates.
