Ugandans told that only a coup will remove Museveni from power

Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has urged his countrymen to organize a coup to remove President Yoweri Museveni from power.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party said Museveni 77, who has ruled the East African country since 1986, cannot be removed through elections.

Kyagulanyi said that Ugandans must do whatever it takes to change the current abusive and dictatorial system.

Speaking in Kasese on Wednesday, August 30, as part of his nationwide mobilization campaigns, Kyagulani said that there was no time left for the opposition to get organized when it was already clear that Museveni could no longer deliver progress to Ugandans.

“I would have addressed you using social media but I have come here physically to show you that I did not give up and I don’t want you to give up,” Kyagulanyi said.

It is widely reported that President Museveni’s eldest son Muhoozi Kaneirugaba retired early this year with an intention to succeed his father, reports that the now-sitting president has refuted.

Kyagulani’s call for a coup comes at a time when at least seven African presidents have been overthrown with the latest being Gabon President Ali Bongo.

Among those who have been withdrawn include President Mohamed Bazoum, Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, and their Sudan counterpart Omar al-Bashir.

Others include Guinea President Alpha Condé and President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta of Mali among others.

Military officers announced on Wednesday, August 30, that they were overturning the government, in an apparent coup targeting President Ali Bongo Ondimba who has been in power for 14 years and whose re-election was just announced.

His family has ruled the oil-rich African country for over 55 years.

Bongo was first elected in 2009 following the death of his father who had ruled the country for 41 years.
