Senegal qualified for the first knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA Qatar world cup.

The teranga lions beat Ecuador 2-1 in a pulsating encounter that is arguably the best showing of the African champions at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

The Lions of Teranga went ahead through Ismaïla Sarr’s penalty before Moisés Caicedo leveled for Ecuador in the second half.

Ecuador pushed for an equalizer, which would have seen El Tri qualify ahead of Senegal, but Koulibaly’s strike proved decisive, ensuring his side reaches the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2002.

Senegal who was grouped together with the Netherlands, the host Qatar, and Ecuador will now face England in the knockout stage.

Two weeks ago, the former Prime Minister said he will only fly to Qatar for the World Cup finals only if any African team will make it to the final.

“I have told them if any African team is in the finals, I will go to Qatar. I will go to the semi-finals and the finals,

“I must begin by saying we are supporting the African teams and we hope and wish that this time our team goes beyond the group of 16, to a group of 8 then semi-finals,” Raila said.
