Anxiety grips Mt Kenya region over President Uhuru’s lack of a clear succession plan

Anxiety has gripped politicians from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard following a delay by the Head of State to provide them with a clear succession plan, barely 7 months from the General Election.

The president is yet to give his Mt Kenya loyalists his succession guidance, even as the clock ticks towards the much-awaited August 9, General Election.

Many politicians from mt Kenya region have pegged their next election’s plans on who president Uhuru will support to succeed him.

Led by Kiambu Woman Rep Sabina Chege, Mt Kenya leaders allied to the President Uhuru and Raila Odinga handshake deal claims the delay is jeopardising plans by individual aspirants under the ‘Azimio la Umoja’ political movement.

This has seen them issue a 30 day-ultimatum to the President to publicly declare who he thinks is the ideal presidential hopeful to take over the leadership failure to which they shall seek other options.

“We have remained stuck with Jubilee (party) against all odds. We have been hoping that (the party) will be relaunched and we get a clear direction about how we are approaching the 2022 succession pol. We are running late,” Sabina Chege said recently.

Her sentiments resonate well with many others in President Uhuru’s turf that he is sending mixed political signals that are confusing them.

This has seen some of the Jubilee players decamp to UDA, a party that appears to be focused on the August 9, General Election and is associated with William Ruto.

The President has on several occasions appeared to be drumming up support for his handshake partner Raila Odinga.

During last year’s Jamhuri day fete, President Uhuru gave a strong signal that he has endorsed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the 2022 presidency after breaching protocol by inviting the presidential hopeful to speak after him.

“We have been in communications for close to 14 months with Raila Odinga when I started this project of Uhuru gardens,

“We have been here with him as he offered me advice and we thank him for what he has helped us achieve,” Uhuru said before inviting Raila Odinga to speak.
