Another Azimio member storms out of Ruto-Raila talks

by Enock Ndayala
The ongoing bipartisan talks between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga are expected to continue on Tuesday, October 31.

Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Thursday, September walked out of the ongoing Ruto-Raila talks at the Bomas of Kenya.

Wamalwa, who is representing the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, was irked after ex-IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati failed to honor the invite to appear before the National Dialogue Committee (NDC).

‘’We were hoping Chebukati would be here and he has denied the country to hear the story from both sides, the arrogance in his letter is something we will deal with,’’ he noted.

Chebukati together with former commissioners Abdi Guliye and Moya Bolu were expected to appear before the Ruto-Raila talks to shed light on the 2022 presidential results.

The trio however declined the invite saying that appearing before the committee would be tantamount to betraying the IEBC staff that were tortured and murdered during the election period.

“With tremendous respect to the Committee, our participation in the talks would be an unmitigated betrayal to the staff that were tortured and murdered and an unfortunate reward for impunity,” Chebukati said.

However, the four breakaway commissioners Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya appeared before the committee where they insisted that the 2022 presidential elections were not conducted in accordance with the law.

“We never tallied the results; they were tallied by people working with the Chairman. There is a prescribed format for declaring all elected positions, and there is a form to be filled.

“For the Presidential results, we as commissioners are supposed to fill out form 34C. That was never submitted to us. What we got from the CEO was a three or four-page summary of all counties. As we speak, we have never seen Form 34C,” alleged Wanderi.

The storming out of Wamalwa from the Ruto-Raila talks happened just days after Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni walked out of the Bomas talks after a heated altercation with Kenya Kwanza’s Hassan Omar.
