by Enock Ndayala

On Sunday, September 2, Kenya’s President William Ruto visited Raila Odinga’s Nyanza region for the first time since he was sworn in.

Ruto attended a church service at the African Inland Church (AIC) in Homa Bay, a function that area MP Peter Kaluma and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga skipped.

The Head of State thereafter addressed Nyanza residents and assured them that his administration will develop the people regardless of how they voted in the just-ended presidential election.

Ruto said the Kenya Kwanza government will roll out key development projects in the region including roads, water, and sanitation to spur growth and improve livelihoods

In a move aimed at creating employment opportunities for the youths in the region, the First in Command said he will in a few weeks coming commission the construction of 5,000 low-cost houses.

“I will be back next month to lay the foundation stone for the first 400 houses and early next year, I will launch the second phase for the construction of 2,000 homes,” Ruto said.

In his charm offensive to win the support of Nyanza residents, Ruto further promised to complete over 200 kilometers that were started by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.

The roads include the Mbita-Kiabuya-Magunga-sori road, which covers Suba North and Suba South in Homa Bay County.

President Ruto further promised to distribute improved seeds of the BT cotton crop which not only produces high yields but is also disease resistant.

“We want to revive cotton farming in Nyanza and parts of the Western region on a large scale to boost the region’s economy.

“We want to give our farmers improved BT cotton seeds to enhance the production of cotton so that our farmers can get better returns and develop the textile industry in Kenya in our efforts to improve our industrialization band agro-processing,” the president said.

On the other hand, those who practice animal husbandry are set to benefit from an artificial insemination program that will assure them productive livestock for beef and milk.
