Mukurweini MP: We are happy all politically motivated cases are crumbling

by Enock Ndayala

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Nordin Haji has in the recent past withdrawn tens of high-profile cases started under the previous administration.

Majority of the cases that have been withdrawn are those of leaders allied to the current Kenya kwanza government led by President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

For instance, on Wednesday, October 12, the DPP dropped corruption cases against ex-KPLC boss Ben Chumo and 10 others citing a lack of evidence.

Former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, former Meru senator Mithika Linturi, and former Samburu County Governor Moses Lenolkulal are among those whose cases have been dropped.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) now wants a clear explanation from Nordin Haji over the sudden surge in the withdrawal of graft cases.

However, even as KHRC raises concerns, Mukurweini Member of Parliament MP John Kagucia has lauded the recent rate at which the DPP has been dropping cases.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, October 13, the Kenya Kwanza legislator said the cases that are being dropped had nothing to do with justice.

While citing cases of former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, Kagucia said most of the cases were politically instigated.

“I am happy that the DPP was able to withdraw cases that were not adding value to our justice. Who doesn’t know Aisha Jumwa was being accused of murder due to her position and her refusal to dance to the handshake tunes?” Kagucia said.

His comments were echoed by Aldai MP Marianne Kitany.

The former Chief of Staff to the Deputy President of Kenya William Ruto said most of the cases during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government were meant to punish those who opposed the Jubilee administration.

“A lot of the cases during the last regime were more about settling scores as opposed to actual cases of graft,” Kitany said.
