Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has officially gazetted William Ruto as the fifth President-Elect.

Chebukati declared Ruto the fifth President-elect after polling 7, 176, 141 votes representing 50.49 percent of the total presidential valid votes cast against his closest challenger Raila Odinga who garnered 6, 942, 930 votes.

In a Gazette notice, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said the former Eldoret North MP achieved the minimum required threshold to be declared the winner.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has officially gazetted William Ruto as the fifth President-Elect.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 88(4), 136, 138(4) and (10) and 148 (3) of the Constitution of Kenya, section 4 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011, section 39 (1) and (1C) and (1H) of the Elections Act 2011, Regulation 87 (3) and (8) of the Election, 2012, the chairperson of the IEBC declares that

“In respect to Article 136(1) of the Constitution and in respect to 148 (3), William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua have been duly elected as the President and Deputy President respectively of the Republic of Kenya having complied with the provision of Article 138 (4) of the Constitution, during the General Election held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022,” read a gazette notice dated Monday, August 15.

Ruto is expected to be sworn in on Tuesday, August 30, (14 days from the date he was declared the winner).

This will only be done in the event that Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party flag bearer Raila Odinga or any other entity does not file a petition within 7 days from when Ruto was declared president-elect.

Although Raila Odinga has not officially spoken following his fifth failed attempt at the presidency, there are indications that he will be moving to the Supreme Court to challenge William Ruto’s win if comments by his close allies are anything to go by.

William Ruto’s allies on the other hand have indicated they are ready for anyone who will try to challenge his presidential election win.
