Presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi pleads not to be arrested in illegal guns drama

by Amos Khaemba

Presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi has pleaded with the Director of Criminal Investigations not to arrest him in the ongoing illegal guns drama.

Through lawyers, on Friday, February 25, Wanjigi requested the DCI to accord him 7 more days to respond to their summons even as the deadline to have him surrender the guns are be arrested elapsed

“Most of the guns date back to 2017 and most of them are not in his possession. So for the finality of this issue of the gun, we requested for the DCI to give us 7 days so that we go there next Thursday (March 3) armed with information that will lead to answering the summons correctly,” the lawyers said on Friday February 25.

The statement from the businessman-turned-politician seen by Kivumbi.co.ke comes after he was given 72 hours to surrender 10 firearms and 485 rounds of ammunition to the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road failure to which he will be placed under lawful custody.

“In this regard, the Director of Criminal Investigation has in the past few months conducted extensive investigations and established that you are in possession of firearms and ammunition that are dimmed to be illegally acquired,” DCI said.

“You are therefore required to surrender the under-listed Firearms and Ammunitions to the undersigned at the DCI Headquarters  Mazingira Complex, Kiambu Road within 72 hours from the date and time of delivery of this summons.,” DCI added.

Speaking on the summons earlier on, the presidential hopeful had accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader Raila Odinga of working hard to frustrate his presidential dreams.

According to Wanjigi, the president and his handshake partner were working with the DCI to ensure he is arrested so that he does not attend the ODM National Delegates Conference that was slated for Friday, February 25.

“Odinga is in working with President Kenyatta and they want to stop my presidential bid by whatever means,” Wanjigi said.

What remains to be seen is whether the DCI will entertain Wanjigi’s request or they will arrest him for failing to honor their summons.

Already the ODM National Executive Committee has proposed that the party endorses Raila Odinga its presidential candidate to vie on the Azimio la Umoja coalition ticket.

This means Wanjigi has no chance of being the party’s presidential flag bearer, putting in doubt his much-held position that he must be on the presidential ballot in the August elections.
