Questions raised over William Ruto’s ‘weak candidates’ for Nairobi top seats

by Enock Ndayala

A section of Kenyans has taken to Twitter to question Deputy President William Ruto’s ‘weak candidates’ that have been lined up for Nairobi county’s Senatorial, Gubernatorial, and Woman Representative seats.

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, and politician-cum-socialite Karen Nyamu are considered to be United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party front runners in the seats.

Margaret Wanjiru has expressed interest in the city gubernatorial seat on a UDA ticket where she is expected to battle it out with billionaire Richard Ngatia, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, and Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja among others.

Mugiithi singer Samuel Muchoki alias Samidoh’s baby mama Karen Nyamu recently joined William Ruto’s UDA party where she is expected to give ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna a run for his money.

On the other side, Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has announced to vie for the Nairobi Woman Rep position and she will be facing city politicians Wangui Ng’ang’a and Esther Passaris.

According to Hellen Njeri, a Dubai-based Kenyan banker who recently offered to work for Deputy President William Ruto for free, UDA has very weak candidates for the Nairobi County top seats.

Hellen Njeri who last year pledged to return to Kenya in August to work as Ruto’s election agent without pay said none of the UDA hopefuls is qualified nor are they strong enough to face their opponents.

“In Nairobi, if we won’t be careful, we won’t win any seat. We can’t have Margaret Wanjiru as a governor candidate, Omanga as woman rep, and Karen Nyamu as a senator or whatever. None of them is qualified to run Nairobi County. We must tell the party the Truth,” she said.

Another social media user identified as Nahashon Kimemia warned Ruto that he risks being the president with a minority in both Senate and National Assembly if he fronts people like Karen Nyamu.

“Dear UDA, let no one lie to you. You have to front strong candidates if you want six-piece. DP Ruto will be a President with a minority in both the Senate and National Assembly if you think you can front people like Karen Nyamu for office without serious consequences.”
