Ruto: We will not allow Raila to destroy Chebukati’s IEBC

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Committee (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati was on Thursday, September 28, expected to appear before the National Dialogue Committee.

On Friday, August 26, Raila Odinga issued a fresh written submission to the Supreme Court among them disbandment of the IEBC claiming that its chairman Wafula Chebukati was unfit to conduct a fresh election.

Last week, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Raila’s bitter rival in the August 9, General Election William Ruto of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance the fifth President-elect.

According to Chebukati, Ruto garnered 71. million votes against Raila 6.9 million votes, the results that four out of the seven IEBC commissioners disowned.

In their arguments filed by Raila’s lawyer Paul Mwangi ahead of Tuesday’s status conference, further want the Supreme Court to order the procurement of new technology for the purposes of a repeat of the presidential election.

But speaking on Friday, August 26, when he welcomed politicians from Raila Odinga’s perceived stronghold who decamped to his side, the President-elect insisted that he will not allow Raila to destroy the electoral commission

Ruto accused Raila of destroying the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) which was led by the late Samuel Kivuitu.

He further faulted the former Prime Minister for destroying the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission led by Isaak Hassa and that he will not allow his main competitor to destroy Wafula Chebukati.

“Our competitors destroyed the Kiviutu commission, they destroyed the Hassan commission, and now they want to destroy the Chebukai commission. We shall not allow them,” William Ruto said.

Ruto, who is fighting to reinstate his presidential victory at the Supreme Court further expressed the importance of respecting institutions so that h rule of law overrides the interest of a few minorities.

“We must build our institutions so that the rule of law overrides the rule of people. Give IEBC its mandate to do its job, and give the judiciary space to do its job,” Ruto added.
