Azimio MP now claims US might have influenced outcome of 2022 presidential election

United States Ambassador Meg Whitman has found himself at a crossroads with Kenya’s opposition leader Raia Odinga in recent days.

This was after Meg claimed that the 2022 presidential election was free and fair, while the opposition maintains that the election was rigged in favor of now-President William Ruto.

In her opening remarks at the 2023 Devolution Conference in Eldoret, the envoy endorsed the August 2022 elections as the country’s fairest and most credible in history.

“Kenya held, what many analysts and commentators say, was the free-est, fairest, and most credible election in Kenyan history,

“The elections were observed by international and local organizations, and the results were upheld by the Kenyan Supreme Court, and power was transferred orderly and peacefully,” she said.

However, appearing on Citizen TV‘s Daybreak show on Monday, August 21, Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe, trashed the envoy’s comments saying the remarks were made in poor taste.

Mugabe, who was elected on Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party stated that Whitman’s comments demonstrate that the Western powerhouse must have had a say in the 2022 polls

“It goes back to us as Azimio to think that America maybe had a lot of influence in this election,” he said.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time the Western country is being linked to Kenya’s elections.

Last year, Raila Odinga’s daughter and the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) nominee Winnie Odinga said the Je Biden-led nation greatly influenced the outcome of the country’s presidential election.

Winnie likened the Western nation’s alleged interference in Kenya’s presidential elections to a person playing a virtual reality game and that she has evidence of how the USA meddled in Kenya’s elections.

“Have you ever won virtual reality glasses? That is what Kenya is to them. You put it on and you play. Kenya is like a PlayStation to them,” she said.
