Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his Kakamega counterpart Fernandes Barasa have opposed the state’s plan to hold AFCON games in Nairobi and Eldoret.

“The UDA government has announced that the AFCON 2027 football matches shall be held in Nairobi and Eldoret,

“The Western region of Kenya is where football fans exist in plenitude. Not in Uashin Gishu, or Eldoret for that matter. The decision by the UDA government may be denying the Western region the opportunity to host the games because we are not shareholders in the Kenya Kwanza Company Limited,” they said.

However, in a statement on Monday, October 2, Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor commonly known as Jalang’o told Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa and his Kisumu counterpart Anyang’ Nyong’o to forget about hosting the Afcon.

Jalas said the Western region did not have the state-of-the-art hotels to accommodate all the players and fans.

The comedian cum politician further claimed that the Western region does not have enough fans.

“Forget about Eldoret, Kisumu, or Kakamega hosting AFCON, Is Nairobi even ready? If we host the opening ceremony do you know we will need 32 top hotels to host the participating nations? The fans? Kakamega asking to host AFCON, wapi? Mane atalala Kakamega Golf ama  ValuValu?” he posed.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania won the bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with an estimated budget of KSh 12 billion.
