Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga may not vie for presidency in the 2027 General Election, Kivumbi.co.ke has learned.

This is after his political nemesis; President William Ruto endorsed the former Prime Minister for AU’s top job that is set to fall vacant next year.

According to the Star Newspaper dated Tuesday, January 9, the Head of State is now banking on Raila Odinga to succeed Moussa Faki of Chad as the new UA Commission chairperson.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga were all eying the post.

However, as part of the truce between Raila and President William Ruto in July 2023, the two senior political leaders in the country agreed to have the ODM leader fronted for the top AU post.

The holder of the office is a key player in major international happenings including elections and conflicts not only in Africa but across the world.

This requires the holder to be neutral in political contests across the continent hence should Raila land the job, he will not vie for the country’s top seat in the next General Election.

Raila who turned 79 years last week had earlier hinted at vying vie for the presidential seat in 2027 for the sixth time should his supporters endorse him.

“Many people are saying that Baba is too old and tired. Do you want me to leave it to anyone? Do you want me to continue? How many want me to go on? Please raise your hands,” he stated.

Adding: “If you want me to go on you have to register into ODM and make it strong. Especially the youth, please come and register. A strong ODM will ensure that Azimio is stronger.”
