Raila Odinga tears into Uhuru-Ruto empty promises in Thika rally

by Amos Khaemba

Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga tore into the failed promises of Uhuru-Ruto made during the 2017 General Election.

Speaking in Thika Stadium on Saturday, January 15, during the Azimio la Umoja rally Raila poked holes in Deputy President William Ruto’s promises saying Ruto has failed to deliver for the 8 years he has been in government.

“He is only good at making promises. He promised stadiums in every county. He promised free laptops now he has begun promising youth’s wheelbarrows,” Raila said in reference to Deputy President William Ruto.

He told Ruto to stop blaming Handshake for the failed promises, saying Uhuru has accomplished more developments under Handshake than during his first term.

“Let him get out of power and I will show him how to lead the country,” He added amidst cheers from the crowd.

The ODM leader said the Ksh 6,000 is not a handout as being propagated by Ruto, but a program of supporting the less fortunate in the society which he categorized as ‘upper poor and rural poor’.

“That will be a necessity to sustain livelihoods. It is not handouts. He promised laptops but he is now giving wheelbarrows,” Raila said.

The former prime minister pointed out that his government will give emphasis to youths having access to interest-free loans to enable them to start a business.

“The youth do not need wheelbarrows, they need better and my government will ensure they start a business,” he said.

Speaking earlier on at Mount Kenya University in Thika, when he met leaders drawn from the Mt. Kenya region, Raila accused Ruto of holding President Kenyatta hostage during his first term in office.

“Uhuru was being held hostage by forces who wanted him to fail and then later on come and claim credit over those failures but you can see when he started working properly in his second term quite a lot has been achieved. You can see many roads have been constructed during his second term,” Raila said.

Raila has been a campaign trail of Kiambu County as he continues soliciting the Mt Kenya votes ahead of the forthcoming General Elections.
