Days after declaring interest in Lang’ata parliamentary seat, ODM leader Raila Odinga’s nephew Jaoko Oburu has bowed out of the race.

Oburu, who serves as the Siaya County CEC in Charge of Roads, Public Works, said that he revealed that he had opted out of the race to focus on helping his uncle and former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, clinch the presidency in the August 9 elections.

“At this point, however, I’m focused on helping Baba (Raila Odinga) to become the 5th President of the Republic of Kenya,” Jaoko said on Thursday, January 20.

While drumming up support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handshake partner,  Odinga’s nephew who is also the Chairman of Youth for The Handshake Alliance(TOTHA), further urged youths to turn out in large numbers and register as youths in ongoing voter registration drive.

He further expressed his gratitude to those who had encouraged him to vie for the parliamentary seat.

“I appreciate all the encouragement for me to throw my hat into the ring for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat,” he added.

His withdrawal from the race comes barely days after Jaoko, the son to Raila Odinga’s elder brother Oburu Odinga had thrown a hat in the ring for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat.

On Wednesday, January 19, Jaoko hinted at out-sitting incumbent Langata MP, Jubilee Party’s Nixon Korir on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

Comedian and media personality Felix Odiwuor alias Jalas and City-based lawyer, and Raila Odinga’s aide Silas Jakakimba are some of the hopefuls vying for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in the August 9, General Election.

Others seeking to unseat Jubilee MP Nixon Korir include Oscar Omoke and Fredrick Ndege also known as Serikal.

Langata is expected to be one of the highly contested areas in Nairobi with the battle pitting United Democratic Alliance, a party linked to Deputy President William Ruto, and ODM.
