Raila’s brother names politician who can succeed the ODM leader

by Enock Ndayala

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s elder brother Oburu Odinga has endorsed Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi as the perfect successor to the ODM leader.

Oburu, who is also the Siaya Senator, said the National Assembly Minority leader has all the qualifications to take over the mantle from Raila.

He said Opiyo, who is among the five-member team appointed to represent the Azimio coalition in the Bomas bipartisan talks always acts in Raila’s interest with precision and awe.

“Wandayi has proved to be a political master who knows the body language of Raila very well and always acts in his interests with precision and awe,’’ claimed Oburu.

Oburu, who spoke at the home of Austin Makamu, a Siaya political activist, in Siaya over the weekend urged the Luo community to embrace Opiyo saying that he was the political maestro in the making.

“Wandayi knows what Raila is thinking about. Within a short period, people have seen his political prowess. For us, we have left for him, that space. They are the people who will now shepherd you to the next move. Embrace him,” he said.

The 77-year-old unsuccessfully made his fifth attempt at the 2022 General Election losing to the now-President William Ruto.

There have been efforts to succeed Raila, with some of the politicians in Luo Land making frantic efforts in vain.

Among those who have been eying the slot include Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, and ODM chairman John Mbadi.

However, the veteran politician who is out of the country maintained that he will exit active politics at the most opportune time.
