Which way Kalonzo Musyoka: How Musalia Mudavadi’s ‘earthquake’ left Kalonzo stranded

by Amos Khaemba

The move by Musalia Mudavadi to invite Deputy President William Ruto to the launch of his presidential bid marked the end of his political association with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Kalonzo Musyoka and his KANU counterpart Gideon Moi were caught by surprise when Deputy President Willaim Ruto and his entourage arrived at Bomas, some wearing ANC-UDA colors, a clear indicator something was cooking.

The two One Kenya Alliance could not bear the embarrassment of sharing the podium with their sworn enemy in the name of Deputy President Willaim Ruto, they decided to storm out of the ‘earthquake’ congregation.

To show that indeed he has lost trust in his colleagues, the ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi never addressed their absence in his speech.

This was not the first time Mudavadi was ‘shortchanging’ his OKA colleagues, he also skipped an important meeting in Naivasha where they were expected to agree on the modalities of identifying the OKA flag bearer.

Come Sunday, January 23, Mudavadi, true to his words, pulled a surprise move by announcing his new political partnership with DP William Ruto.

The news partnership between Musalia Mudavadi and William Ruto has placed Kalonzo and Gideon in a tight corner as they need to explore their options quickly considering the fast approaching August 2022 General Election.

“We are therefore moving to higher grounds where Kenyans are safer. It is time to move forward, it is time to end the nasty political games,” Kalonzo and Gideon said in a statement.

What remains to be seen is which higher grounds the two will move to, as their options seem limited.

According to observers, Kalonzo and Gideon’s options are limited; create another coalition and seek friends, join Ruto -Mudavadi camp, or join Raila’s camp.

Political pundits opine that the probability of having a Kalonzo-Gideon ticket is minimal, as the two cannot threaten DP Ruto and Raila Odinga.

There are indications that Gideon Moi will support the Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga whom they have a good working relationship.

In fact, a close source ally of Mudavadi said the ANC leader had grown suspicious of Gideon Moi, who he considered a mole planted in OKA by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kalonzo Musyoka’s dilema

Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper has high chances of contesting the August 9 presidency under the Wiper party even though his chances of winning are equal to zero.

Makueni Senator, a key Kalonzo ally, is in agreement that Kolonzo Musyko is between a rock and hard place.

“He has serious issues with Raila and Ruto. Going alone will be a guaranteed loss and joining any of them will require him to step down all issues he has raised or step down, if he can.,” Mutula told The People Daily.

“Joining either Raila or Ruto will come at a cost. It is the cost he will need to consider because the community does not want to be in the opposition again. The options are thinning fast and furiously…in reality, I don’t envy this position,” Mutula added.

“Kalonzo is in a good place because he will move the needle if he joins either Ruto or Raila. His stock is growing by the day as he waits for political offers to be placed on the table,” Makau Mutua said in an interview with The People Daily.

For sure we can say that the Wiper leader is in a state of confusion, but the decision he makes will definitely sway the presidential results in one way or another.

Will Kalonzo jion Ruto-Musalia or Azimio of Raila Odinga?
