Win for Uhuru as court grants him control of Jubilee Party

by Enock Ndayala

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in May 2023 suffered a setback after his allies Jeremiah Kioni and David Murathe lost a suit on Jubilee party leadership.

The duo had filed an appeal at the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal after the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu declared that they had been duly removed from office as Secretary General and Chairman respective.

They had been ousted by members of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) of members allied to EALA MP Kanini Kega who took over as the party’s Secretary General.

Aggrieved by the decision, the pair through their lawyer Mbuthi Gathenji challenged the decision remarking that the NEC was unconstitutionally convened.

However, on Monday, August 7, High Court granted ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta’s allies full control of the former ruling party.

High Court judge Lady Justice Aseneth Ongeri on Monday, August 7, stayed decisions made in February and May which saw party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and chairman David Murathe kicked from the party.

“The application is certified urgent. Status quo to be maintained pending an interparty hearing on September 13, 2023,” Ongeri ruled.

Reacting to the momentary win, Jubilee Party remarked that the case had brought the total number of active cases at High Court against the Kega-led group to four.

The Kioni-led faction implored Jubilee followers not to recognize the leadership of Kanini Kega until the case was heard and determined.

“We continue to stand firm, unbowed by the constant threats by the puppets and their masters keen on taking over our dear Jubilee Party,” the group stated.

Last month, former Ndaragua Member of Parliament Kanini Kega accused Kenya’s President William Ruto of the woes witnessed within the Jubilee party.

“You can hear him say Jubilee is a sinking party. Ruto himself said Jubilee is a dead party. Why are they then interested in a copy?” he posed.
