Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta has been missing in the eye of the public since his estranged political friend turned-foe William Ruto was declared President-elect.
Uhuru had thrown his weight behind Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party flag bearer Raila Odinga in the August 9, General election.
However, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati declared UDA presidential flag bearer William Ruto as the fifth president-elect much to the disappointment of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
His conspicuous missing in the public eye had started raising tension, especially from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance faction which urged Uhuru to come out of his hiding and congratulate his successor even as the Supreme Court investigates whether or not Ruto won legally.
But on Wednesday, the Head of State made his second public appearance since he was last seen casting his vote in Ichaweri, Kiambu County.
The outgoing head of state was in Mombasa where he held a meeting with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party leaders.
Uhuru was in the company of ODM deputy party leader Hassan Joho, and newly elected Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir among others.
Althogh the details of the meeting remained scanty, Uhuru latter had lunch at the famous Baraka restaurant in Old Town, Mombasa.
“We were also not aware if the president was coming. The meeting lasted about thirty minutes,” said a county staff who requested anonymity told the Star.
This comes just days after politicians allied to William Ruto asked outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta to break his silence about the stalemate over the August 9 presidential election results.
The politicians led by Governor Stephen Sang, have mounted pressure on President Kenyatta to come out and congratulate Ruto.
“Even when your political rival wins, the best option is for the incumbent to congratulate the winner,” Sang said, urging President Uhuru to embrace democracy and support Ruto.
