All about the 8 politicians vying for Nairobi gubernatorial seat

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted 8 politicians for the Nairobi Gubernatorial contest in the August 9, General Election.

Among those who were cleared include Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, former Nairobi deputy governor Polycarp Igathe, and businesswoman Agnes Kagure.

Others include seasoned journalist Denise Kodhe, Esther Waringa Thairu, Harman Singh Grewal, Kenneth Nyamwamu, and Nancy Wambui Mwadime.

The 8 are expected on Monday, July 11, expected to sell their manifesto to the over four million city dwellers in the Nairobi gubernatorial debate.

Kivumbi.co.ke takes you through their profile ahead of their debate which will be held at the Catholic University for East Africa (CUEA) main campus in Karen Nairobi from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

  1. Agnes Kagure

Agnes Kagure was born in Nyeri in 1974. She is most known as a Kenyan insurance executive and businesswoman.

Kagure was mentioned as the founder of The Insurance Consulting Group, but it is not among those registered by the Insurance Regulatory Authority in 2022.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chiang Mai Rajabhat University in Thailand.

She will be seeking to become the fourth governor of Nairobi County on an Independent ticket after the ruling outfit Jubilee handed Polycarp Igathe a direct ticket.

A gender activist and insurance executive, Kagure has been voted Agent of the Year for seven years by the Association of Kenya Insurers.

In 2011, she was featured among the Top 40 Women under 40 by Business Daily.

  • Daniel Kodhe

Kodhe is a seasoned journalist who has worked for both local and international media in Kenya and in Africa.

He has worked as a diplomat with the African Union in -charge of an Organ and as Director-General of the Institute for Democracy and Leadership in Africa (IDEA for Africa).

He is a philanthropist supporting orphans and needy children at Saidia Furaha Children’s Home.

He will be seeking to give Sakaja and Igathe a run for their money on Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) party ticket.

  •  Harman Singh Grewal

Harman holds a Bachelor of Law from Strathmore University and a Master’s Degree from Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA).

The 25-year-old is presumably the youngest gubernatorial candidate not only in Nairobi but across the country.

Singh who represented the country in The Kabadi World Cup in 2019 will be seeking the gubernatorial seat on Jimmy Wanjigi’s Safina party of Kenya ticket.

  • Esther Waringa Thairu

Waringa is the current Chairman, of the Independent Candidates Forum of Kenya.

She once worked as an Operations Manager at Msingi East Africa (now Gatsby Africa).

  • Johnson Sakaja

Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja was first nominated as a Member of Parliament in 2013.

In the build-up to the 2013 General Election, Sakajan was named the founding chairman of The National Party (TNA) in 2012.

Sakaja’s academic qualifications remain a mystery even as the 37-year-old is believed to have studied Actuarial Science at the University of Nairobi.

He will be seeking the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

  • Kenneth Nyamwamu

Nyamwamu holds La Sierra University – Bachelor of Computer Science (BS), from La Sierra University and a Master of Science in Data Analytics from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Nyamwamu will be vying for the seat on a United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

He is a Data Analyst and registered nurse, largely based in the United States (US).

  • Nancy Wambui Mwadime

Nancy Wambui has been a Real Estate Developer at Costa Homes.

She will be vying for the seat at Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria’s Usawa Kwa Wote party.

  • Polycarp Igathe

Igathe is a Kenyan businessman, politician, and corporate executive.

Polycarp who acts as the Chief Commercial Officer in Equity Group Holdings was handed a direct ticket by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party.

He had earlier served as the Vice President in charge of Sales and Marketing in Vivo Energy Africa. Before that, he had served as the Chief Commercial Officer of Equity Bank Kenya, between May 2018 and September 2018 when he was later promoted to the Managing director position.
