Former Mungiki leader vows to unite Mt Kenya politically

by Enock Ndayala

Prior to the 2022 General Election, the vote-rich Mt Kenya region was divided between the East and the West.

The region which had since independence voted as a bloc further split between the tanga tanga (those supporting William Ruto) and the Kieleweke (those that threw their weight behind ODM leader Raila Odinga) factions.

More than eight months since the hotly contested presidential elections, central Kenya is yet to unite.

As such, ex-Munguki leader Maina Njenga has vowed to bring to an end the split in the region.

Speaking to the Star, the Amani Sasa Foundation chairman maintained that he will be traversing the GEMA region reaching out to the community leaders for the sake of peace and unity.

“We are talking about the unity of the Mt Kenya people- the Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu and as their spokesperson I know we will unite and speak with one voice to champion our interests,” he said.

Njenga said the Kikuyu community stands to suffer a lot politically in the coming years due to the split in the community.

“GEMA community should sit down and speak in one voice as failure to do so will cost the community dearly,” he added.

He further declared himself as the Mt Kenya spokesperson having been given the mandate by the late minister Njenga Karume who was his relative.

“I’m the spokesperson of the Mt Kenya region and this debate of who is the region’s kingpin should end. I visited the late Njenga Karume at his deathbed in the hospital and he gave me the mandate to look after the community and since I don’t want to attract his curse, nothing will stop me from pushing and protecting our people,” he added.
