Fresh controversy emerge around Jonson Sakaja’s degree certificate

by Amos Khaemba

The drama surrounding Nairobi gubernatorial candidate on UDA ticket Johnson Sakaja’s degree certificate keeps on deepening every day.

Before the clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), there were claims that Sakaja had procured a degree certificate from a neighboring country that he intended to use.

On Thursday, June 9, Kivumbi.co.ke reported that the youthful politician used a Team University 2016 degree to seek clearance from IEBC.

But fresh details have emerged showing the Sakaja, the current Nairobi senator never graduated from the said institution.

In a story published by the Daily Nation on Sunday, June 12, a booklet from Team University for the graduation ceremony that took place in October 2016 does not contain Sakaja’s name among the six BSC (Management) graduands.

According to the Commission for University Education(CUE), Team University claimed that Sakaja attended online classes.

“CUE tried to investigate but the University wrote and said Sakaja attended the program online. The qualifications were also confirmed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. Once they own a student, you can’t dispute. That’s the way it is for us,” CUE CEO Ntarangwi told Daily Nation.

In a casual interview with singer Nyashinski on September 22, 2020, Sakaja says he has never pursued education outside the country. So where did he graduate? Why did he present a Ugandan degree?

“I have never pursued education out of Kenya. I pursued all my education here in Kenya” Sakaja is captured saying in the video that has gone viral.

In 2017, Senator Sakaja indicated to the IEBC that he graduated from UoN but according to UoN in a story published by the Daily Nation, Sakaja is yet to graduate.

“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from the first year up to the fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” the University of Nairobi said as quoted by Daily Nation.

In a recent interview, Sakaja was unable to name some of his classmates after claims that he never graduated pers isted.

The controversy has left many Kenyans on social media questioning the integrity of the youthful politician.

Johnson Sakaja has been lying to Nairobi voters that he graduated with a First Class in Actuarial Science, but the University of Nairobi is telling Sunday Nation that he’s still a student and is yet to complete the course. Hawa ndio wakora na watapeli Ruto has been talking about.” Gabriel Oguda said on Twitter.

“Propaganda is when you claim you graduated from the University of Nairobi when you graduated from Team Building university. Let us not pretend here. Sakaja is a fraud,” Real Dalmas, a random Twitter user opined.
