Raila kicks Sabina Chege out of plum parliamentary job for siding with President Ruto

Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja held its first-ever Parliamentary Group Meeting since the hotly contested 2022 elections.

During the meeting, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party made several resolutions among them to strip nominated MP Sabina Chege from the plum parliamentary seat.

In a statement on Thursday, April 6, shortly after the PG meeting, KANU, one of the affiliate parties in Azimio said the former Murang’a Woman Representative will no longer serve as the Minority Whip in the National Assembly.

“Azimio One Kenya Parliamentary Group has resolved to eject a nominated MP Sabina Chege as Minority Whip in the National Assembly,” the party said in a statement.

The Coalition, however, did not immediately replace the former Murang’a Woman Representative but the KANU party has since suggested Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda replace Sabina in the highly-contested position.

Her ejection comes just days after the opposition leader Raila Odinga recommended a change in the law in order to discipline rebellious leaders.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader asked the lawmakers who recently met President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi to leave their parties under the umbrella of Azimio La Umoja.

“The Members of Parliament who defected need to resign and go and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate” Raila ordered.

It further comes barely a month after the Jubilee legislator declared that she will not participate in the demos and that she would instead work and support President William Ruto’s government.

“This past week, I went to State House. I got there before every one of you – because I respect anointment and elected leaders.

“At the moment, the region’s leader is Rigathi Gachagua, and we must support him,” she stated.
