Ruto blasts Raila for giving conditions to accept upcoming presidential election

by Amos Khaemba

Deputy President William Ruto has blasted the ODM leader Raila Odinga for being non-commital in accepting the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.

In a press release on Thursday, March 17, the deputy president wondered why the former premier is always giving conditions for him to accept election results.

The second in command said that the ODM leader has no role in determining the validity of elections in Kenya, adding that there are competent institutions that have the capacity to play that role.

“The fairness or lack of, in an election is not and cannot be determined by any candidate’s subjective opinion of the results. Kenya has institutions to determine the validity of the election,” Ruto said.

DP Ruto who recently was endorsed as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate challenge Raila to publicly make an undertaking that he will accept the August election results without giving conditions.

“William Ruto has committed to and continues to unequivocally challenge his competitors to unconditionally commit to accept the August 2022 presidential results and submit to existing institutional frameworks. No BUT’S, No IF’S

“This commitment and guarantee should be made to kenyans and the rule of law must always prevail.” Ruto stated.

The sentiments by Ruto come after Raila while speaking at Chatham House in UK Wednesday, March 16, committed to accept the outcome of the August General Election on condition that it will be free and fair.

“If the elections are free and fair and we win or lose fairly, we will accept the result anyway…so long as it is free and fair,” Raila had said.

The ODM boss who is making a fifth stab at the presidency revealed that his team had already raised with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) their concerns towards a free and fair contest.

“We have pointed areas of concern we want them (IEBC) to address to ensure the process is free and fair.” Raila said.
