Trouble ahead on ODM nomination as Raila supports handpicking

by Nderi Caren

ODM leader Raila Odinga has welcomed the consensus method as a way to avert nominations disputes in the party ahead of the 2022 General Election.

This method will see some contestants of the ODM nominations tickets drop their bids to contest for certain political seats.

The ODM leader encouraged dialogue among contestants to settle on the person who will fly the party ticket through the consensus method.

Speaking in Kibra on Wednesday, November 17, Raila Odinga said the consensus method will be applied first, followed by 2 other methods.

“The first one will be consensus, while the delegates system will be second option. The third option will be use of party members with membership cards and not just IDs,” Raila Odinga said.

He urged the ODM supporters to register as party members so as to partake in the party nominations if ODM chooses to go that route.

However, Raila Odinga also revealed that the ODM party may resort to issuing direct tickets as the last option in order to avert conflicts in the party.

ODM leader’s decision to welcome the consensus method echoes that of his wife Ida Odinga.

Raila Odinga’s wife has been pushing for consensus and endorsing suitable candidates for ODM nominations.

This has caused division within the party where some members are dissatisfied with the move with others welcoming it.

Ida Odinga is said to be calling for the consensus method to make sure there are no destructions from party nominations that could lead to a fallout in the party and injure Raila Odinga’s state House race.

She has since endorsed Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi for the Nairobi Gubernatorial ticket.

“He is a very organised, intelligent, and educated person. I worked with him when he was at the Kenya Paraplegic Organisation. If it is something being done using brains, he’s got very good brains. If it is something that needs good organisation, he is a very organised person,” Ida Odinga said.
