Ex-Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu’s KSh 588 million scandal dropped

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had accused former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu of using his position to defraud the county.

The former county executive who was impeached in January 2022 is also accused of improperly awarding a KSh 588 million road contract.

Waititu was accused of fraudulently accumulating assets totaling KSh1.94 billion between 2015 and 2020 while serving as governor.

However, on Thursday, October 6, a Nairobi Court dropped KSh 588 million corruption case against Waititu alongside the Kiambu procurement team.

The court cited a lack of evidence to sentence the former Kiambu county governor and his procurement team.

This was after the prosecution failed to provide evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the former County boss embezzled public funds through proxies and kickbacks.

The dismissal of the case comes barely two weeks after Waititu’s graft case was adjourned following an adjournment request by the defense team.

Prior to the commencement of the case against Waititu, the High Court granted an application by the State to freeze 18 properties and seven cars owned by Waititu.

Whereas Kenyans are praising the new administration on how it is dealing with corruption cases, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party feels the Kenya Kwanza government is being partisan in handling the matter.

Earlier on, Sirisia MP John Waluke was slapped with 67 years in jail or paid a fine up to the tune of KSh 1 billion.

In other news, the High Court overturned the acquittal of former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya in KSh 60 million fraud case.

It should be remembered that both Waluke and Kimunya were ardent supporters of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and they were among those leaders who critiqued the Head of State.

On the other hand, Waititu is a close ally of the First in Command.
