“I have no time for that nonsense” DP Gachagua says on being Mt Kenya kingpin

by Enock Ndayala
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria have in the recent past been firing salvos at each other.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he has no desire to be the vote-rich Mt Kenya kingpin.

Addressing church congregants in Kiambu County on Sunday, November 5, the second in command said he is currently focused on serving Kenyans as the deputy president.

Gachagua stressed that there is no constitutional provision for a political kingpin, and he has no intention of pursuing such a position.

The deputy president urged those interested in being Mt Kenya kingpin to pursue their dreams.

“Lately, the kingpin narrative has surfaced. I have read the Constitution and I didn’t see a provision for a kingpin. Where is the office of the kingpin? How much is the salary? If there are people who want that office, I am not part of it because I am already Deputy President with an office at Harambee House, and Karen and I have a salary,” DP Gachagua said.

Adding: “So if there are people who are interested in that position, si wachukue waendelee na kazi yake then watuambie afisi yao iko wapi na functions yao na mshahara yao ni gani?”

Gachagua’s sentiments come amid talks on who between him and Rtd. President Uhuru Kenyatta is the rightful Mt Kenya kingpin.

Among those interested in being Mt Kenya’s kingpin include Public Service Performance and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, and former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

Last week, the former Mungiki sect leader expressed his desire to take the leadership of the vote-rich Mt Kenya region from Uhuru.

Njenga, who unsuccessfully vied for the Laikipia senatorial seat in the 2022 elections, said Kikuyu traditions demand that the leadership stuff, popularly known as ‘Muthigi’, be handed over when a leader exits from the position, which he maintained was yet to happen.
