Machakos governor says William wants him to join Kenya Kwanza team

Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has revealed that Deputy President William Ruto is courting him to join the yet-to-be registered Kenya Kwanza coalition.

This was after Mutua, whose second term as county boss ends in August, together with other eight parties affiliated with Azimio la Umoja threatened to quit the coalition.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, April 7, the Mendeleo Chap Chap party leader revealed that the deputy president and his troops have been after him for some time now with the latest call being that of William Ruto.

“There is the option of joining Kenya Kwanza. I saw a missed call this morning from Deputy President William Ruto. I haven’t spoken to him, his people have been calling me for the last couple of weeks,” Mutua said.

Mutua, who had shelved his presidential ambitions in favor of the ODM leader Raila Odinga however said he will first engage members of his party on the way forward.

On Wednesday, April 6, Mutua threatened to bolt out of the outfit citing the lack of inclusivity in decision-making meetings.

“We want to be treated with respect because we are doing this for Raila Odinga and we will not agree to be tricked and played, have our party excluded from the ballot, I also have an option of renewing my presidential bid. It is not that I am lost of options,” he stated.

However, the county boss indicated that if his party will fail to strike a deal with the Azimio team in the next 48 hours, he would completely walk out of the coalition.

“The other four options are that I can decide as Maendeleo Chap Chap get out and continue on its own and we will negotiate as a party after the elections,” Mutua said.
