Regional MPs ask retired president Mwai Kibaki to guide Kenya in Uhuru’s succession

A caucus of regional parliamentarians from the Senate and the National Assembly has asked retired President Mwai Kibaki to come out and guide the country on president Uhuru’s succession.

The Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FPICGLR), of which Kenya is a member, said the move will guarantee a peaceful transfer of power after the hotly anticipated 2022 presidential elections.

Led by Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka who is also the president of FPICGLR, the group further appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to share the voter register to all election observers and party agents as it was in Zambia.

“In Zambia, the verification process of voters upon entry into the polling stations is done thoroughly by all the parties, thus mitigating rigging,” the MPs said in a report read in the Senate by Nominated senator Sylvia Kasanga.

With barely 10 days to the 2022 General Election, the presidential race has attracted a crop of leaders ranging from artists, second-term governors, bishops to career politicians.

However, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto have been considered the front runners in president Uhuru’s succession politics.

In August, the outgoing Head of State asked Kenyans to make a wise decision during the 2022 presidential election.

According to President Uhuru Kenyatta, the opposition leader Raila Odinga is the best person to take over the country in 2022 when he retires from active politics.

On Tuesday, September 28, Mt Kenya region tycoons under the Mt Kenya Foundation umbrella held a consultative meeting at a Nairobi Hotel where they largely endorsed Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

“We want somebody who will take over and there will be continuity in the kind of development projects that have been started. Secondly, somebody who will not disturb our businesses and thirdly somebody who we can sit with and agree on how to go forward,” said Titus Ibui, Mt Kenya Foundation Vice Chairman.
