Kenyans were left in shock on Wednesday, December 1, after the leadership of the Catholic Diocese of Kisii returned a KSh100k donation it had received from Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati.
This was after the Nairobi-based lawmaker, who is eyeing the Kisii governor’s seat in 2022 was allegedly denied a chance to address the congregants despite donating more than KSh 100k for the church, a move that did not settle well with Arati.
While the politicians have criticized Kisii-based Catholic Bishop for reversing the said cash, the man of God said he did so not because he does not subscribe to the ideal of Arati but to prevent the wrath of God from bedeviling the legislator.
Speaking at a funeral service on Wednesday, December 1, moments after reversing the said contribution, Catholic Bishop Joseph Mairura said politicians eying several political seats cannot win by fighting God.
He said those who will use their financial masses to fight God for their own political goodwill stand to be cursed.
“Let me warn our politicians that you cannot succeed by fighting God and the Church. Those who do that stand cursed and will not go anywhere,” said Mairura.
While confirming to have received KSh 100k from the Catholic Church, the ODM lawmaker questioned the clerics for only returning a part of the donation.
“I gave out money to several leaders in the church. Why then are they claiming to have returned part of the money?
“Why are they not returning the rest, which amounts to more than KSh 300,000?” Arati wondered.
The legislator accused a section of the church leadership of being used by some politicians from Gusii to frustrate their opponents ahead of his Kisii gubernatorial race.
“Senior politicians from Kisii County fighting me come from the same clan with the church leaders. This issue has taken a political and clan direction. It has nothing to do with spirituality, it’s all politics,” Arati told the Daily Nation.
