Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi changes tune after endorsing Raila

Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi has changed tune on his preferred 2022 presidential candidate being Raila Odinga.

Speaking on Monday, December 13, Kiraitu Murungi said that his newly launched Devolution Empowerment Party(DEP) has not settled on its preferred Presidential candidate.

Governor Kiraitu Murungi said that DEP will announce their position after residents have settled on their preferred candidate between Raila and Deputy President William Ruto, of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“It is the bus that will make that decision. It is not about Kiraitu Murungi, Mugambi Imanyara (secretary-general) or any other DEP official. We will consult the drivers of the bus, who are party officials, as well as the ward representatives and they will tell us the candidate our people in the villages want,” he said.

This is a change of tune from the Governor’s earlier position where he castigated William Ruto and endorsed Raila Odinga for the 2022 presidency.

On November 15, the Meru Governor urged his people to support Raila Odinga, who has good policies for the other than William Ruto who will not be beneficial.

“We must refrain from politics of hate and unnecessary invitation. The people of Meru want policies that will benefit them post 2022. They want to hear policies on miraa, tea, coffee, milk among other economic policies. Not shallow empty rhetoric,” Kiraitu Murungi wrote in a tweet.

This attracted uproar from William Ruto, who told Kiraitu to stop imposing Raila Odinga on the Meru people.

“We, 8 million people, have we lacked someone to lead us? We don’t have brains?…why are they are bringing that man of parables (Raila Odinga) to lead us? That is disrespectful,

“We have formed the government twice,  developed the country, all over a sudden someone (Kiraitu Murungi) is bring us, someone else to lead us,” William Ruto said.
