Bomet East MP retires from politics after 20 years

Bomet East MP Beatrice Kones has announced that she will not be running for any elective seat in the August 9, General Election.

The former Home Affairs assistant minister and widow of former Cabinet minister Kipkalya Kones said she will be retiring from active politics in August 2022 after serving for two terms as the legislator.

“I take this opportunity to announce my retirement from the field of politics… As of now I am retiring home and I want to say thank you very much for the honour the people of Bomet East bestowed upon me,” she said.

The Bomet East MP who was speaking to Daily Nation on Monday, January 31, however, stated that she will be serving Kenyans in other capacities.

“I am so proud I am going home as a proud mother so that I can serve my people in a different capacity,” the legislator said.

She thanked the people of Bomet East and the larger Bomet County for the support they gave her during her tenure at the helm of the constituency after the of her husband.

“I want to really appreciate the people of Bomet who have been very supportive to my family,” she said.

She was re-elected to the Bomet East parliamentary seat in the 2017 General Election on a Jubilee party ticket after she floored her first borne son Kipngetich who vied on former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto’s Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) ticket.

The 65-year-old former P1 teacher first vied for the Bomet East parliamentary seat in the 2013 General Election.

Between 2008 and 2013, she worked in the Ministry of State, Office of the Vice President and Home Affairs, as Assistant Minister.

Prior to that, Beatrice was a member of the Kenya National Assembly where she became a Member of Parliament for Bomet Constituency in Bomet County.

She also served as the Maendeleo ya Wanawake vice-chairperson.
