Kisumu couple names son after Raila Odinga’s political movement, Azimio

by Amos Khaemba

A couple in the Nyanza region has taken their love for the ODM leader Raila Odinga to a new level by naming their newborn child Azimio, which is the proposed political coalition to be led by Raila Odinga.

A birth notification card circulating online and seen by Kivumbi.co.ke, indicates that the child was born on February 19, 2022, at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital, in Kisumu county.

While the couple’s identity was hidden, it can be seen the child has been named, Azimio Hongo Gwada.

The Luo community hardly follows an established partner in naming their newborns, unlike many African communities who majorly name children after relatives or based on seasons or places of birth.

The luo community is known to name their children after major global events or famous personalities besides the traditional naming based on seasons, relatives and whether or not the baby was born during the day or night.

For instance, during the Baraka Obama reign as the President of the United State of America, many children born in the larger Nyanza region were named after him.

Nyanza residents are Raila Odinga fanatics, and they are always ready to do any weird things for the ODM leader whom they call ‘Baba’.

The region is considered as the political bedroom of the former prime minister where he is adored to the extent his opponent hardly campaigns there.

The naming might not be that strange especially this being the electioneering period where nearly the whole of Nyanza rally behind Raila to the last man.

The ODM leader is expected to officially launch Azimio la Umoja coalition on Sunday, February 27, at Kamukunji grounds.

Raila is expected to use the Azimio coalition as his presidential vehicle for his fifth attempt to vie for the presidency in the forthcoming August 9 election.

In an interview with The People Daily, Raila Odinga’s Presidential Campaign Board chair Ndiritu Muriithi revealed that the event will bring together all political formations supporting Raila’s candidature.

“This will be a big event. This will be the launch of Azimio after the NDCs. I would expect all the frontline leaders under the Azimio la Umoja to attend,” he said.
