Some of the new county bosses have been sending staff on compulsory leave over what they term as “paving way for investigations over their alleged involvement in graft.”

However, the majority of the governors have been doing so to create avenues to award their allies with job opportunities.

As such, Nakuru governor Susan Kihika has sacked over 70 county employees who were hired by her predecessor Lee Kinyanjui.

Confirmed reports indicate that majority of those who were fired were drivers and personal assistants from former Governor Lee Kinyanjui’s office.

“Those affected are from the political office, drivers, protocol departments, and the PAs to Governor Lee,” the Kenyans.co.ke reported on Thursday, October 13.

It was further reported that the mass firing was politically motivated since the new employees did not face scrutiny.

“They were all political appointees. That’s to say, it’s the Governor who picked them and they didn’t undergo competitive recruitment,” the reports added.

Apart from a one-month notice, those who were fired were entitled to a month’s salary and a certificate of service.

“Please accept this letter as our formal notification to you that we are terminating your employment in accordance with regulation 28(3) of the Public Service Commission Regulations 2020 effective 11th October 2022.

“You shall be paid one month’s salary in lieu of notice and gratuity for the period served. Kindly note you shall be issued with a certificate of service upon clearance,” read the letter in part.
