A day after Governor Kiraitu Murungi joined the yet-to-be registered Azimio la Umoja coalition, the former prime minister Raila Odinga has taken Meru County by storm where he drummed support for his Azimio la Umoja movement.

On Thursday, March 10, the ODM leader traversed the vote-rich county where thousands of residents turned up to welcome him.

The ODM leader began his day, by leading a fundraiser of 3,500 members of various women groups in Meru at Maua Stadium.

Later on, Raila held a mega rally at Maili Tatu where he called on the police to stop unnecessary harassment of Boda Boda operators.

The former Prime minister warned against the blanket condemnation of riders in the country.

The Opposition Chief while condemning the Wangari Maathai Road incident where a female motorist was assaulted in broad light cautioned against victimizing innocent riders for the sin of others.

“There was an incident in Nairobi where a woman was attacked by Bodaboda operators, we must all condemn such. If someone makes a mistake that is a criminal and they should face the law. Let not all the riders made to pay for the crime of others,” Raila said.

He was accompanied by Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, Laikipia Governor Nderitu Murithi, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, and National Assembly majority Whip Maoka Maore among others.

Meru County is one the most populated county after Mt Kenya after Kiambu and Nakuru, it boasts over 700,000 registered voters.

The county which overwhelmingly voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta in the past two elections is known for its large turn-out during the election.

In the 2013 presidential elections, out of the votes cast, President Uhuru got a whooping 440,630 votes with Raila Odinga getting 3,038 votes only.

In the 2017 presidential election, President Uhuru emerged the best with 482,580 compared to the ODM leader who got a mere 55,602 votes.
