Ex-CS Sicily Kariuki speaks after links to William Ruto’s assassination attempts

Former Water Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has dismissed reports that she and three other Cabinet Secretaries were plotting to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto

Kariuki, who recently resigned to focus on unseating Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia in the August 9 General Election termed as ‘ugly politics’ the reports linking her to William Ruto’s assassination attempt.

“It is politics. Ugly politics. When they say politics is dirty, it can be as dirty as it gets. You cannot even sit to plan or plot anything like this even if you’re not okay. Now we are focusing more on development. Murder in Lamada, that’s what the media called it,” the ex-CS told the Daily Nation.

In 2019, a full-blown assassination saga erupted after a letter alleging a high-profile secret meeting where several Cabinet Secretaries including Peter Munya (Trade), Sicily Kariuki (Water), and Joe Mucheru (ICT) met at Lamada Hotel to plot Ruto’s murder started circulating on Twitter.

Ruto is said to have notified his boss about the threat on his life after which President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to probe the allegations.

The letter which was widely shared on social media was allegedly authored by one of the members of the Executive.

While the investigative officer would later term the alleged murder plot as fake, the Nyandarua gubernatorial aspirant said her close family members were gravely affected by the allegations.

Kariuki revealed that her mother’s elder brother almost got a stroke while watching the news of the assassination saga on TV and he had to be taken to the hospital.

“You mean we took her to school and performed very well only to be a thug? How can it ever happen to our family, he asked,” she said.
