Jimi Wanjigi: Raila is a hero but has nothing more to offer Kenyans

by Enock Ndayala

ODM presidential ticket contender Jimmi Wanjigi has said that his party leader Raila Odinga has few solutions to problems currently affecting Kenyans.

While terming the former Prime Minister a hero who sacrificed greatly for the freedom that Kenyans enjoy today, Wanjigi said the country needs a new crop of leaders for the next phase.

Speaking in Nyeri County after attending a church service at St Peter’s ACK on Sunday, August 29, the businessman said time has come for Raila Odinga to exit active politics

“My friend Raila is a hero of the Second Liberation (struggle for multi-party democracy in Kenya) but his time is up,” he said.

The businessman-turned-politician at the center of KSh 1.3 million clothes debt further criticized the current crop of politicians eyeing the presidency in next year’s General Election

“There are those who have been in power for more than 30 years; my good friends Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, and William Ruto all belong there. They have nothing new to offer and it’s time for fresh leadership in the nation,” Wanjigi said.

Several months ago, Wanjigi who has been playing the role of a kingmaker announced that he will be seeking to succeed retiring president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Despite his intentions to challenge Raila Odinga in party primaries, the ODM party has accused Wanjigi of causing concerns in the party by opening ODM offices without permission.

“We have a procedure of opening party offices, and we have made formal communication that all ODM party offices must be directly under the guidance of the secretariat since ODM is a party,” said ODM chair John Mbadi.

The Suba South Member of Parliament further condemned Wanjigi for embarking on campaigns prematurely in a move that appears to have rattled some ODM stalwarts.

In a recent meeting with ODM Secretary General at ODM headquarters, Wanjigi defended his move to pen offices saying there is a need for the party to grow its membership countrywide.
