Kalonzo Musyoka drops presidential bid, rejoins Raila Odinga

by Enock Ndayala

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka last month ditched Raila’s Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance and announced that he will be vying for the country’s top seat in this year’s elections.

This was after the former vice president lost the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential running mate to Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua.

In a move to convince him to stay, Raila offered Kalonzo Musyoka the Chief Cabinet Minister, a position he declined stating that it is not in the constitution and that they should put the agreement in writing.

Known for shifting political camps, Kalonzo was put under intense pressure to remain with Raila as 45 wiper party officials out of the 50 voted for his stay in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance party.

On Thursday, June 2, Kalonzo succumbed to pressure and announced that he had shelved his 2022 presidential ambitions in favour of Raila Odinga for a record third time.

Speaking from the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka center, Kalonzo who had been accompanied by KANU chairman Gideon Moi further said he is set to take up the Chief Cabinet Minister that was offered to him.

“After wide consultations with the party leadership, clergy, and the professionals, I have decided to accept with humility and appreciation my nomination as the chief minister in the Azimio One Kenya coalition,” Kalonzo Musyoka said.

The Wiper party leader noted that part of his agenda to rejoin Azimio was the opportunity to choose a united and prosperous Kenya that would excel under the 24-hour economic plan.

“These dreams and aspirations will not die. We have an opportunity to choose a prosperous Kenya. The alternative according to me is unthinkable and unacceptable,” he said.

The development comes just days after Wiper officials asked the former vice president to reconsider his decision of ditching Raila saying they feel safe in his hands.
