Makau Mutua: UDA will lose to small parties in Mt Kenya

by Enock Ndayala

The Kenya Human Rights Commission chairperson Makau Mutua has advised politicians from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region to seek elective seats using small parties.

Taking to his social media paged on Monday, December 27, the United States-based Kenyan lawyer and activist sensationally claimed that UDA, a party that has boasted of having taken control of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s political bedrock will lose to small parties in the huge voting bloc.

Mutua, a fierce defender of the ODM leader Raila Odinga further warned politicians from the Mt Kenya region against seeking elective seats on William Ruto’s party- UDA.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission chairperson Makau Mutua has advised politicians from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region to seek elective seats using small parties.

“In Mt Kenya, those running on the UDA ticket will be shocked by small “tribal” parties,” Mutua said in a Tweet.

The law professor further said that majority of the sitting Members of Parliament from the Mt Kenya region will not be re-elected in the 2022 General Election.

“Very few MPs a minuscule number from Mt Kenya will be re-elected in 2022.  The attrition rate will be over 90 percent,” he stated.

The deputy president has been making inroads in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region as he popularizes his Bottom-Up economic model ahead of his battle for the presidency with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In his rallies across the country, Ruto has insisted that those who want to support him must fold their fringe parties and join UDA, in an apparent plan to turn his UDA into a behemoth, perhaps similar to what Jubilee was.

“These small parties are vehicles used by their leaders to bargain for positions. politics of ethnicity benefits a few leaders with positions and privilege, whoever wants to work with us must fold their outfits and join UDA,” Ruto said in his latest visit to Kwale County.

Some of the small parties in the Mt Kenya region include Martha Karua’s Narc Kenya, Moses Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi, The Service Party led by former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, and the Party of National Unity among others.
