Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana drops presidential bid in favour of Raila Odinga

by Enock Ndayala

ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid has received a major boost after Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana shelved his ambitions in favour of the former prime minister.

Speaking at the Enashipai Resort in Naivasha during an Azimio la Umoja consultative meeting, Kibwana said he dropped out of the presidential race after consulting his Makueni county people.

He said the people of Makueni told him that he is still young and that he would resume his presidential bid after the August 2022 General Election.

“I consulted my people in Makueni on Thursday, January and my people gave me a go-ahead to support Azimio through Muungano party and they told me that I have still age on my side and at some future point I will resume my presidential candidature,” he said.

This brings to 30, the total number of governors who have thrown their weight behind Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

In August 2021, Kibwana who is serving his second and last constitutional term as the boss of Makueni County, had officially joined the growing list of 2022 presidential aspirants.

“Kivutha Kibwana will be the President of Kenya because he will be on the ballot in the 2022 presidential elections,” the county boss said on Monday, August 30.

Last month, Kibwana disputed claims that the 2022 presidential race is a two-horse race between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

While exuding confidence that he would beat William Ruto and Raila Odinga, the governor trademarked himself a donkey saying he is the ultimate servant leader just like Jesus Christ rode on a donkey to face his time trial.

“It is said the 2022 General Election is a two-horse Raila-Ruto race with an OKA mule and several donkeys on the track,

“As a presidential aspirant, I accept the tag of a donkey. Jesus Christ, the ultimate servant leader, rode on a donkey to face his epoch trial,” Kibwana said in a Tweet on Sunday, December 5.
