Last weekend, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua treated Nyeri residents to a sumptuous meal as promised during the 2022 presidential campaigns.

Video doing rounds on social media captured Nyeris locals joyously enjoying a plate of rice and meat at the Sagana State Lounge.

This ignited varied reactions online, majorly, sarcastic congratulatory messages to the former Mathira MP for fulfilling his manifesto for the people of Nyeri.

“Like some Roman emperors, Ruto and Gachagua have mastered the art of bread and circus! That is how they will keep people distracted as they run down the government,” Jubilee blogger Pauline Njoroge said in a Tweet.

In a quick rejoinder, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei dismissed the criticism terming it as envious of critics.

In a statement on Monday, August 7, Cheragei, a close ally of Kenya’s President William Ruto further alluded that Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition was jealous that ordinary citizens were being served by the President.

He said those critiquing the move did not believe that a normal citizen can have a handshake with the president just like it was during the previous governments.

“The anger you see from Azimio – OKA minions is that ordinary Kenyans without VIP invitations are having lunch with President Ruto at State House and State lodges which were out of bounds for holloi polloi yet they are public offices,” Cherargei said.

It is worth noting that in July 2022, the then Kenya Kwanza running mate Rigathi Gachagua promised to invite Nyeri residents for a plate of lunch at the Sagana State Lounge should Kenya Kwanza form the net government.

“There is one thing President Moi used to do and we request you to do it, any time you come to the State Lodge, open the door, prepare rice and meat for our people to eat, just that,” Gachagua said.
